Heaven Piercing Gun Lag

Heaven Piercing Gun Lag also known as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a fan anime on TV Tokyo.

I've seen tons of pictures about it and finally decided to have a look. For a long time I thought Yoko Ritona was a character made up by some web artist and that's because she is a copy of several anime characters. When I did a bit more research, I found that every character in the show is a copy of somebody, so in case you disagree, I'm gonna give my explanation here. This picture should help.

Makken (Bottom-left), is a copy of both Avatar: the Last Wind Chanter and Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker. There are several references to Avatar in his appearance that have been strongly caricatured, for example his distinct lack of shoulder joint, his awkward posture, his badly shaved head, his badly drawn arms, the way his clothes don't wrinkle correctly and the ends of his scarf which have been copied from pig ears instead of real cloth. Most of the facial features however are references to a certain character from the Zelda game I mentioned, including his incredibly double chin, completely unrealistic square jaw, his badly drawn gaunt appearance, sharp cheek, lazy eyes (in more ways than one) and wandering eyebrows.

Zoushi (Far-left), is undeniably a copy of One Piece, his jawline, under bite, cigarette, hairstyle, high collar with long simple neck and his entire eye are directly copied. In fact, even his posture is that of one of the characters.

Kidd (Second from left, standing), is either a copy of a Disney character (possibly from Atlantis, I can't remember what film), or a copy of a character from the Alien comic book series. There are several digs at western cartoons within the character including needless detail on the face and lack of detail elsewhere. The eyes are also deliberately badly drawn and cross-eyed, the shading is all wrong, the character has 2 sets of eyebrows, the hairstyle doesn't make sense and the clothes despite being made of fabric have no real creases or folds.

Old Coco (Second from left, squatting), is a copy of both a character from the Street Fighter series (not Dhalsim) and one or more characters from the Dragonball series. He has an incredibly rigid mustache, large eyebrows that replace his eyes, gaunt cheeks, round head, skinny body and the pose is from another character from Dragonball, the perverted old man main character.

Kinon (Third from left, bending), is a copy of a character from Digimon. Her entire head is identical, the hairstyle, the glasses, the eyes and even the expression on her face. The pose and gloves are also from the same character BTW but not necessarily the same series.

Kiyal (Third from left, stretching), is a copy of Excel Saga or at least when she is in this pose. The arrow eyes, side fang mouth and fingers are also copied from the same pose. She's also drawn with a very round face and there is little detail on the arms much like how the main character in Excel Saga is drawn.

Ailak (Third from left, standing), is a copy of Naruto and several other animes as well. The pose is one anime, the clothes are another, the hair is mainly from Pokemon and there's something about the way the jawline matches up with neck that distinctly resembles Naruto.

Kiyoh (Forth from left, leaning), is a copy of Full Metal Alchemist. The belt, top, pose, glove and expression are all from the same image. The hair however and the way the open eye is drawn is a copy of Pokemon.

Dayakka (Forth from left, standing), is a copy of a character from an anime I can't remember. He looks exactly the same apart from his chiseled chin, dot eyes and wayward hair. It's his extremely good posture that gives him away.

Yoko (Center-left), is a copy of Keroro Gunsou. This includes the style the hair is drawn in, the entire face, the fact they have a thing in their hair and the distinct lack of clothing coverage as the original was wearing a bikini. The pose, hairstyle and some elements of the clothing however are from Pokemon.

Jougan and Barinbou (center high) are a copy of Excel Saga. The style the hair is drawn in, the ears, the distinctive head shape, the glasses and the expressions are all from the same character though not necessarily at the same time. The arms, necklace and clothing are also drawn in the same style as the show.

Simon (center low) is a copy of One Piece. Anyone who can look at that and not see the main character staring back at you needs their head examined. The face, the stance, the pants, the body shape and even the bandages are from the same picture. They've drawn him wearing goggles to obscure the unusual head shape due to copying a character wearing a hat at the time.

Nia (center right) is a copy of both Excel Saga and Dot Hack. The face, some elements of the bangs and abnormally smooth and narrow limbs are from Excel Saga but not the same character. The hairstyle though is identical to that of a Dot Hack character.

Leeron (Fifth from right) is a copy of One Piece, Excel Saga and Naruto. For a start he is wearing a recolored identical in every way jacket from one of the characters in Naruto. The head is mainly copied from a character from Excel Saga but with the eyes more closed. The hairstyle however is a direct copy of One Piece, right down to the little flick one inch from the fringe.

Kittan (Fourth from right) is a copy of both Pokemon and Mega Man. The two characters are almost identical to begin with but he has the hair, lips, collar and jaw from Mega Man and the eyes, stance and most of the rest of the clothing from Pokemon.

Tetsukan (Third from right, high) is a copy of several animes. To begin with, this style has been used over and over but this one has distinct trademark features from certain characters that are drawn in the style. The eyes but not the expression in them are from Lupin III, the nose, mouth and chin combination is from Shin Chan, the glasses and expression are from Coil and the shape of the head in relation to the pose is from another anime (Doremi I think).

Rossiu (Third from right, center) is a copy of a Naruto character. You could swap their heads and you wouldn't know the difference, apart from the fact Rossiu's eyes are rolling back in his head. I don't know the name of the character he's copying but the poncho and the fact he's carrying a book are also references but not from that character.

Gimmy (Third from right, low, to the left) made me LOL. He is a copy of a character from an anime I don't remember well but he's been recolored and had half of him replaced with a character who was copying that character to begin with.

Darry (Third from right, low, to the right) is a copy of Harry And Goo but there are elements of Excel Saga. The expression, the way the hair is drawn, the face thing beneath her head and the exact color of the hair itself are all from Harry And Goo. The hairstyle itself however is from Excel Saga and the same expression was used on that character also.

Attenbourough (second from right) is quite frightening. The style of the character is mainly Excel Saga with elements of One Piece. I knew I'd seen that character before so I asked who it was meant to be. This was their reply.

Tombo Kopoli (on the right) from Kiki's Delivery Service. Now you know why I was frightened. Now back to the first pic I posted.

Reite (Far right, high) is a copy of a doctor from an anime. She's just like the character but the clothes are too baggy, the glasses are a bit larger and so are her bangs. The baggy clothes are to exaggerate the fact that the original character wasn't wearing tight fitting clothing like you'd expect.

Gabal (Far right, low) is a copy of Dot Hack. His entire head is identical to the character but there was no sweatband. The outfit, pose and that exact build are also from somewhere, the same place as each other but I'm not sure where, Possibly Pokemon. Pokemon would also make a lot of sense as there is a very similar looking character facially on that show.
